7 Website Mistakes Costing Plumbers & HVAC Companies Jobs (and How to Fix Them Fast)

By David Gorelick · November 2, 2026

When someone's water heater dies or their AC quits in the middle of a heat wave, they don't browse. They search, tap the first few results, and call whoever looks trustworthy and easy to reach. Your website has seconds to win that call. These are the seven mistakes we see most often on plumbing and HVAC websites, with a one-minute self-check and a fast fix for each.

1. No click-to-call button on mobile

Check: Open your site on your phone. Can you call you with one tap from the top of the page?

Fix: Add your phone number as a tappable link in the header, and consider a sticky "Call now" bar at the bottom of the mobile screen. For emergency trades, this single change can noticeably increase calls.

2. Hiding the fact that you offer emergency service

Check: If you offer 24/7 or same-day service, is it visible within the first screen?

Fix: Say it plainly near the top: "24/7 emergency plumbing — call now" or "Same-day AC repair." If you don't offer it, state your real hours so people know when to expect a callback.

3. A slow, heavy homepage

Check: Run your homepage through Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool and look at the mobile score.

Fix: Compress and resize photos (most should be under 300 KB), remove auto-playing sliders and videos, and uninstall plugins you don't use. A homeowner standing in a puddle will not wait for a ten-second load.

4. Stock photos instead of your real team and trucks

Check: Are the people on your site actually your employees?

Fix: Replace stock images with real photos: your team, your branded vans, finished installs, clean job sites. People want to know who is coming into their home. Real photos build trust faster than any slogan.

5. One page that lists every service

Check: Do drain cleaning, water heater installation, furnace repair and AC maintenance each have their own page?

Fix: Create a short, dedicated page for each main service: what it is, signs you need it, what to expect, a few common questions, and a call to action. This helps customers find exactly what they need and gives search engines a specific page to show for each search.

6. Contact forms that don't work (or ask too much)

Check: Submit your own contact form right now. Did the message arrive? How long did it take? How many fields did you fill in?

Fix: Cut the form to name, phone, email and a short description. Make sure submissions go to an inbox someone checks during business hours, and set up an automatic reply so the customer knows you received it. Broken forms are one of the most common and most expensive problems we find.

7. No reviews on the website

Check: Can a visitor see what real customers say without leaving your site?

Fix: Add a handful of your strongest recent reviews to the homepage and service pages, with first names and the type of job. Link to your review profiles for more. Then make asking for reviews part of every finished job — a short text with a link works well.

Bonus for small clinics: the same rules apply

If you run a small dental, chiropractic, physical therapy or wellness clinic, the same principles hold: tappable phone number, clear hours, online booking if you can offer it, real photos of your team and space, and reviews. One extra point: be careful collecting health information through ordinary contact forms. Keep forms to basic contact details and use a proper, compliant booking or intake system for anything clinical.

Where to start

You don't need to fix everything at once. Here is a sensible order:

  1. Click-to-call and a visible emergency or hours message (an afternoon of work).
  2. Test and simplify your contact form (an hour).
  3. Compress photos and remove heavy elements (a few hours).
  4. Add reviews and real photos (ongoing).
  5. Build out individual service pages (a week or two).

Each step makes your site a little better at the one job it has: turning visitors into calls.
