Contractor Website Checklist: 12 Things That Turn Visitors Into Calls

By David Gorelick · November 2, 2026

Most contractors don't lose jobs because their work is bad. They lose them in the first eight seconds on their website, when a homeowner with a leaking roof or a stalled remodel can't figure out how to call, can't tell if the company is legit, or gives up waiting for a slow page to load. The good news: almost every one of those problems is cheap to fix.

Here is the checklist we use when we review a contractor website. Go through it with your own site open on your phone, because that is where most of your visitors are.

Above the fold: the first screen matters most

1. A tappable phone number at the top. On mobile, your number should be a real tel: link in the header, not an image and not buried in the footer. If a visitor has to copy and paste your number, you have already lost some of them.

2. One clear headline that says what you do and for whom. "Quality You Can Trust" tells nobody anything. "Roof Repair & Replacement — Free Inspections" does. Visitors should understand your service in one glance.

3. One primary call to action. Pick the action you want most, usually "Call now" or "Get a free quote", and make it the biggest button on the page. Five competing buttons is the same as none.

4. Where you work, written in plain text. Mention the areas you serve in normal sentences. It helps visitors confirm you cover them, and it helps search engines understand where to show you.

Trust: prove you're the real deal

5. Licensed, insured and bonded — say it. If you are, put it near the top. Add license numbers where your trade requires them. This is one of the first things careful homeowners look for.

6. Real reviews, with names. Pull three to five of your best reviews onto the homepage and link to where people can read more. A short quote with a first name and the type of job beats a generic "5 stars" badge.

7. Real project photos. Stock photos of smiling models in hard hats are easy to spot. Even phone photos of your actual work, cropped and well lit, build far more trust. Before-and-after pairs are gold.

Structure: make it easy to find the right service

8. One page per main service. If you do roofing, siding and gutters, give each its own page with a short description, photos, common questions and a call to action. Separate pages help visitors and give search engines something specific to rank for each service.

9. A simple menu. Home, Services, Projects, Reviews, About, Contact. That is usually enough. Clever labels slow people down.

Speed and mobile

10. Loads in under three seconds on a phone. Test your site with Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool. The usual culprits are huge uncompressed photos, too many plugins and heavy sliders. Compressing images alone often cuts load time in half.

11. Works with a thumb. Buttons big enough to tap, text readable without zooming, no pop-ups that cover the whole screen. Ask someone who has never seen your site to request a quote on their phone and watch where they get stuck.

Forms that get filled out

12. A short quote form that actually works. Ask only for name, phone, email, and a short description of the job. Every extra field costs you leads. Then test it: submit it yourself and confirm the message arrives, ideally to an inbox you check daily, with an automatic "we got your request" reply to the customer. A surprising number of contractor sites have forms that silently fail.

Bonus: the small things that add up

How to use this checklist

Score your site honestly: one point for each item you fully meet. Most contractor websites we look at land somewhere between 5 and 8. You don't need a full redesign to move that number. Fixing the top three — a tappable phone number, a clear headline and a working quote form — often makes the biggest difference within days.
